Hey Mama!

I've been trying to get the Everyday Sanity (& Insanity) issue of the MFC eLetter out since - well, since the last issue. But life & motherhood has had different ideas - many different ideas! A huge part of adjusting to motherhood for me has been trying to accept and adjust to the fact that I have a lot less control over my life and my schedule than I did before - and I didn't have that much control before!

I'm finding that another big part of adjusting to motherhood is having to let go of how I think things need to go and how I think they need to look - for the sake of my sanity & the sanity of my family. I'm a recovering perfectionist (a crippling disease!) as well as a recovering professional. If I waited to put out the MFC eLetter until it was perfect and up to my professional standards, it wouldn't be out at all! There is no money behind this effort and the eLetter's lone "staff member" - ME - is a Stay-at-Home Mom with no childcare.

Here's what I'm trying to say: although the next eLetter isn't quite ready, there are two very important events happening this weekend I want to tell you about. I just want to let the new members know that advocacy and "The Outside World" section of the MFC eLetter is one of many aspects of the Moms' Friendship Circle. You may not be able to focus on anything beyond your baby and surviving each day right now. I've been there and I completely understand - and totally support you in focusing on your little one!

Now that my daughter is 3 years old and mothering has become easier, it's my belief that, while many of the important challenges Mothers face can be solved within ourselves and within our families, some of the most difficult problems Mothers and families face originate and can only be solved in "The Outside World."

So, here's what's going on this weekend:

Saturday, April 24th - It's not too late to support the March of Dimes WalkAmerica sponsored by A Mother's Haven - their annual fundraiser for the prevention and treatment of infant prematurity. It will be a fun day for an important cause.

This Sunday, April 25th, the March For Women's Lives in Washington, D.C. is expecting a million people (!) from all over the country to stand up for women's rights (and, in my view, FAMILY rights & HUMAN rights), namely, - Freedom of Choice, Family Planning Funding and Accessible Healthcare - all of which are currently facing serious threats. A peaceful demonstration in support of the D.C. effort is happening at the same time (Sunday 9 a.m. - noon) RIGHT HERE IN LOS ANGELES at the Federal Building in Westwood. (See www.LA4DC)

The Moms' Friendship Circle, as the name implies, is based on principles of friendship. One of the principles of friendship, as I understand it, is that friends don't always have to agree. They can hold different opinions, everyone's opinion can be respected, and no one needs to be "wrong." So, if you don't agree with the March For Women's Lives or anything in this eLetter at any time, please write in and help us get an interesting exchange of ideas going!

If you are Pro-Choice, please join me at The Federal Building on April 25th to stand up for choice and the right of women and men to determine the course of their own families and their own futures. I'm one of the organizers of the event, so I'll be wearing a yellow T-shirt with "I am the face of Pro-Choice Los Angeles" on it. I'm tall and have long black hair. Please say "Hi!"

Love,

Michelle

P.S.

If you believe in one or both of these causes, please help spread the word by forwarding this email.

You can also print out the attached flyer for the LA4DC demonstration. Any opportunity you may find to distribute or post it would be wonderful! The LA4DC flyer can also be printed from the LA4DC website - https://www.LA4DC.com - or the Planned Parenthood website - https://secure2.convio.net/ppla/site/SPageServer?pagename

The March of Dimes WalkAmerica Sponsored by A Mother¹s Haven

Date: Saturday, April 24th

Time: 7:00 AM

Walksite: Griffith Park Park Center, Near Merry-Go-Round 4730 Crystal Springs Dr Los Angeles, CA

A Mother¹s Haven is sponsoring a team of walkers for the March of Dimes WalkAmerica - their annual fundraiser for the prevention and treatment of prematurity. Laine, the Owner of A Mother's Haven, has pledged that as a team she would raise $2000, although she would like to raise more.

While Laine's son wasn¹t premature, he was in the Neonatal ICU for several days, and she had a tiny taste of only part of what a parent of a preemie experiences- it is very scary and difficult. Laine has several friends whose babies were preemies- and her sister was premature.

Fortunately, all named above are wonderfully healthy. However, Laine has worked with many preemies during her years in early intervention that weren¹t so fortunate. They need continued health and developmental intervention and their families need continued support. The March of Dimes supports these babies and families, as well as provides women at-risk for having premature babies with education and support to try to help reduce or prevent prematurity.

A Mother¹s Haven is looking to you for support. Laine invites you to join her team and walk with her or sponsor Laine as a walker.

If you can join their team- great! Sign up on-line by pasting this link in your URL:

If you can¹t join their team, but can make a pledge to their efforts, thank you! Your pledge can be made online by pasting this link into your URL: http://www.walkamerica.org/personal_page.asp?w=103889

Laine would like to thank you all in advance for whatever contribution you can make.

In addition to caring for her preschooler, Laine Podell-Camino owns A Mother's Haven, a boutique and education center for expectant and new parents in Encino. A Mother¹s Haven offers a full curriculum of prenatal classes, including prenatal yoga and CPR for expectant couples, and an array of mother/parent and baby classes, including the internationally renowned Kindermusik for 4 month olds 7 year olds! Their boutique boasts the largest selection of nursing bras and clothing in the San Fernando Valley, as well as pump rentals and sales, slings and wraps, preemie and layette clothing, great baby accessories and diaper bags for moms, a pregnancy/parenting book nook and a warm and caring staff. Additionally, Laine and A Mother¹s Haven support, the March of Dimes and The Crib, two non-profit organizations that assist mothers and babies.

Please reply to this email with "March of Dimes WalkAmerica" &/or "A Mother's Haven" in the subject line for more information.

The March For Women's Lives

LA4 DC Peaceful Demonstration

Date: Sunday, April 25th

Time: 9:00 AM - NOON

Place: The Federal Building 11000 Wilshire Blvd. Westwood/W. L.A. (Between So. Sepulveda & Veteran)

Website: http://www.LA4DC.com

In Washington, D.C.

>From the Planned Parenthood website - http://www.plannedparenthood.org:

March for Women's Lives The March for Women's Lives on April 25, 2004, promises to be one of the largest public demonstrations in support of reproductive freedom in history. We are organizing diverse delegations from around the world and we invite you to join us. If you're pro-choice, pro-privacy and pro-family, the March for Women's Lives is about you. Join us, as we demand reproductive and social justice for women at home and abroad.

Why March?

* Since taking office, the Bush administration, Congress, and state governments have launched a war on reproductive rights in the U.S. and around the world.

* The anti-choice movement very well may have within its reach a U.S. Supreme Court that will overturn Roe v. Wade.

* Efforts are underway to pack the federal courts with nominees dedicated to rolling back women's rights and ending legal abortion.

The March for Women's Lives will show Congress, the president, and other elected officials that their vicious assault on women's health and on access to safe, legal abortion is opposed by a strong, united majority of Americans. You can help make this event the strongest demonstration of support for reproductive freedom ever.

A PROJECT for the March for Women's Lives (Thank You Marilynn) -It's too late to join in on this project, but I think it's very cool - M

This is a crafty project so if your crafty feel free to help, if not perhaps you can help by spreading the word to someone who is ----- For the March for Women's Lives in DC, I will be knitting millions of purple and gold (lemon yellow) wrist bands. These are the colors of the march and also the colors that were on the flags in the 'Iron Jawed Angels' HBO original movie on Alice Paul. I have people all over the country joining me for this project, some crocheting and some weaving.

How cool will it be to see a crowd of women and men raising their fists clad with a purple and gold feminist wrist bands? -YEAH!!

Peace!

Sam

In Los Angeles

"On Sunday, April 25th 2004, 'Angelinos in Solidarity for Women's Lives' hopes to rally over 500 people on the lawn of LA's Federal Building. They are spearheading a peaceful demonstration in support of women's rights, namely freedom of choice, family planning funding, and accessible health care. The impetus behind the demonstration is the historic March for Women's Lives' to take place in Washington, D.C. that same day. Members of newly formed ASWLdecided there ought to be a local way to participate in the aforementioned march. Says member Jill Heinrich, "We don't want to host a competing event; rather, we hope to gather in solidarity with our sisters in D.C. We found there was major interest in a localized demonstration from people who couldn't travel to D.C. because of financial or other obligations. We're providing a forum for those voices to be heard, and those numbers to be counted among the national feminist majority."

The primary objective on 4/25, from California to the District of Columbia, will be to raise concerns for lawmakers during this important election year. Pro-choicers take the stance that women's rights across the board are under siege by the current governmental regime, lead by President George Bush. They want politicians to recognize the thousands of voters who support Roe V. Wade, (the landmark 1973 court case the ruled a fetus is not considered to be an independent 'person', and gave women the legal right to terminate a pregnancy), among other bills to promote and protect women's reproductive rights. Many will carry signs that read, 'I vote and I'm Pro-Choice.'

For further details, contact ASWL through their website at http://www.LA4DC.com

A small group of women have very hastily organized a Los Angeles demo on April 25, in solidarity with the D.C. March for abortion rights. It'll be at the Federal Building in Westwood on Sunday, April 25, from 9am-noon. [This is an adult only event. Park on the street - M]

PLEASE spread the word far and wide, tell every pro-choice person you know in Southern California about this, and post it on any webspace or community calendar that you have access to. I hope you will make it, if you're in town!

Congrats to Planned Parenthood L.A. for being the only March sponsor actively organizing in L.A.! Their delegation will have 400+ and they were able to raise scholarships for 50!

Our Mamas for Choice delegation currently has 55 adults and 17 kids and we're all very excited about D.C.. Two of our delegates' trips were subsidized by donations raised from the feminist community, and we'll have pictures for all of our sponsors after the march.

You can print flyers from http://www.LA4DC.com Thanks! Dorie Lanni Mamas for Choice

What Is The MFC eLetter ?

The Moms' Friendship Circle eLetter is Moms sharing resources, information, experiences and encouragement with each other. It strives to address the interests and needs of real life Mothers*. The Moms' Friendship Circle began first as a new Moms' group in 2000. Some workshops followed. The Moms' Friendship eLetter began in April of 2003. It is very much an organic, developing work-in-process.

All Moms are welcome - affluent Moms, Moms receiving assistance from the government, very young Moms, women who became Moms later in life and Grandmothers; Stay-at-Home Moms, Moms who work for pay; married Moms, co-habitating Moms, divorced Moms, gay Moms, single Moms, and Moms who decided to have a child without a partner. Every age, color, race, spiritual perspective, & economic circumstance, every parenting style and personality is welcome. Our commonality is that we are Mothers. And that means we have a lot in common! Moms' Friendship Circle members are self-selected. Members tend to be women who are interested in conscious parenting, their own and their loved ones' spiritual and emotional growth, and the social, political and economic realities that affect them and their families.

The MFC eLetter is not a professional thing - it's just me, Michelle Kobayashi, Stay-at-Home Mom. So please forgive late night/early morning typos, funky spacing, unpredictable delivery, etc., etc.. Each issue focuses on one broad topic. I pass on some information I discover or write, but I can't do it alone! And I really don't want to! This eLetter is an expression of my own need to connect with other Moms - my need for support & wisdom from Moms and my need to know that I am not alone. The MFC eLetter depends on contributions by member & non-member Moms, family related professionals, business people, and spiritual & community leaders.

It doesn't cost money to be a member of the Moms' Friendship Circle. We just ask that you join in the spirit of sharing among friends. The MFC eLetter isn't a passive experience. It is a give and take experience. But you don't have to give much, especially if you have a new born (!) or you are experiencing Mom-Overwhelm right now.

At minimum, just a couple contributions a year is fine. A contribution can be one business name, address and phone number. Or a beautiful spot to visit with a child. A book. A tip on how to make house cleaning go super fast would be great! Or how to jumpstart our sex lives!

But there are so many interesting things to share - articles, poems, news, book excerpts, writing of your own - any good information or inspiration you've discovered on your journey of motherhood. And, of course, we'd all love to know what you think, feel, and what YOUR experiences have been. In fact, we're DYING to know!

I love feedback. I NEED feedback. So don't hesitate to share your thoughts.

Thank you for contributing!

Love,

Michelle Kobayashi Maya Dori's Mom

* Moms' Friendship Circle eLetter does not intended to exclude Dads. Dads are enthusiastically & warmly encouraged to join our Circle. I LOVE Dads! I believe Dads are 100% as important to children as Moms are, and that they could benefit from support as much as Moms can. Actually I wish, wish, wish I could do something for Dads! But, I have seen from experience and observation, that Dads need other Dads to help light their way, just like Moms need other Moms. At the same time, if an opportunity to support Dads or Dads' groups ever arises, I will jump at the chance. - M

* I capitalize the first letter in Mom, Mother, Dad, Father etc. because I was taught in school to capitalize the first letter of a job title.

How Does MFC eLetter Work?

The Moms' Friendship Circle eLetter is an email. Bear with me! I know it's awkward. I'm working on a website, but I don't expect it to be up before January, 2005.

Only first names are used, and email addresses are NOT shared even with other Moms without permission. Your information (including email address) will not be sold, given away, or traded to anyone else.

You can remove yourself from the Moms' Friendship Circle eLetter at any time if it's not right for you. Simply reply to this email with "Please Remove" in the subject line.

In order to avoid conflicts of interest, The Moms' Friendship Circle eLetter does not accept advertising.

Details and contact information are not always published. Please reply to the MFC eLetter email address momsfc@adelphia.net to contribute or ask for any information you would like. Asking readers to request further information is the best way I can think of to discover what MFC eLetter readers are actually interested in. I can mold the eLetter with the help of this information. In addition, some of the Moms would rather not have their email addresses shared before they can do an initial screening.

If you place information in the eLetter and get responses, I will forward the responses to you. That is the end of my involvement. It is then up to you to follow up.

Since this is a community service (READ: I don't make any money), I don't impose deadlines on myself. Experience has shown that deadlines stress me out and don't hold any weight with my 3 year old.

Replying to a Moms' Friendship Circle eLetter implies your permission to reprint your email in the MFC eLetter in order to help Moms. Only your first name will be shared. If you would rather your reply not be reprinted - no problem - just state that in your email.

All resources and recommendations included in the Moms' Friendship Circle eLetter are a statement of personal preference by the person who referred them. In some cases, their preference may be based on a one-time experience. They may have a parenting style that doesn't suit your family. Use your own judgment.

None of the events, products or services mentioned in the Moms' Friendship Circle eLetter are connected to the Moms' Friendship Circle, Moms' Friendship Circle eLetter or Michelle Kobayashi in any way unless specifically stated.

I seriously doubt if I'll ever have the interest, time or energy to do it - but, who knows - I might put all this in a book (or some other form) someday. So, If you don't want your information to appear in a publication for families - don't send it.
